Planters got its start in 1920 and spent a few years finding its footing before settling at 513 Walnut in 1928. The building dates to 1880. The wood floors are original. Farmers used to show up early in the morning with a long list because they couldn't make it back to town often. The store stocked whatever they needed. Spices, seeds, coffee, hardware.

For decades Planters was the place people came for spices, garden seeds, and the particular kind of easy conversation that only happens when someone behind the counter actually knows what they're talking about. It outlasted trends and big-box competition.

That kind of staying power doesn't happen by accident. It happens because a community decides a place is worth keeping.

In June 2026, Anna and Brad Perrin acquired Planters Seed & Spice Co. because this store had a hundred years of history, a loyal Kansas City community behind it, and the bones of something really good that deserved to keep going.
